Ancelotti: I choose AC Milan

ancelotti

Milan Coach Carlo Ancelotti has dismissed rumours that he wants to leave San Siro this summer.

It hasn't been a successful season for the Diavolo who are out of the UEFA Cup and out of Scudetto contention.

And there have been regular Press reports linking Ancelotti with a switch to Real Madrid this summer.

“I just work and I don't pay attention to these whispers,” Ancelotti told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I still haven't found a good reason to leave Milan. I am happy here and I will stay for a long time yet.

“However, while I am happy to stay here I have always stressed that it takes two to keep the marriage going.

“As long as we secure third place and Champions League qualification for next season I am ready to stay.

“Then we can build a great future around Kaka and Alexandre Pato. We have solid foundations so we won't need to make sweeping changes. The supporters are behind us but they want us to win,” he concluded.

LET'S RECHARGE OURSELVES! (Interviews with Luca Antonini)

Here are the declarations made by Luca Antonini to Milan Channel's microphones, today at Milanello, before the team's afternoon training session:

Luca, today the training restarts, after Sunday's match at Napoli.
"Yes, it's our first day of work. There aren't many of us because a lot of players are with their national teams, but those of us who are here will have the right spirit every day. This extra week will be useful to get some 'fuel' for the matches left until the end of the season. We'll face the break with the right tranquility, but also with the right commitment. For players like me who don't play that much, these will be important days to work hard and try to put the coach in difficulty in his choices."

When the league resumes Milan will face Lecce, Chievo, Torino, and Palermo. Matches that seem easy on paper.
"In the last few years the Serie A has become more difficult because also the 'small' teams can put you in difficulty. Milan will have to do well against these teams and finish the season by qualifying for the Champions League. Our objective is the third place, but we will also try to finish second. The first four matches will be important. We also have Lecce and Torino, who have recently changed coach, so they will face these matches with a different spirit than before considering that the clubs decided to make a change to give the players a boost. Chievo are doing well recently and are obtaining good results, but first of all we have to think about doing well against Lecce who are our first opponents."

How are Milan doing?
"The team is doing well, in the second half against Napoli they were better, but in the first half we were the better side. We knew it would be difficult to play in Naples, then they tried to give it their all because they were coming off a difficult period. Milan, in any case, are doing well, we are running and these two weeks will be useful to the team to prepare well and resume the season well."

How are you doing, Luca?
"I'm doing well, I'm waiting for my moment and I wait for the coach to give me a chance and take advantage of it. I made many sacrifices to come to Milan and I'm ready to make more."

Gourcuff return to AC Milan??

France starlet Yoann Gourcuff insists his time at Milan was positive and could return to the Rossoneri in the summer.

The 22-year-old fantasista is currently on loan at Bordeaux and has produced some truly world-class performances.

French newspaper L'Equipe hailed him as the “New Zidane” after he scored a wonderful goal against Paris Saint Germain earlier this season.

Gourcuff joined Milan from Rennes in 2006 and made just 47 appearances in two seasons with the club.

He enjoyed a difficult relationship with Coach Carlo Ancelotti and grew bitter at the lack of first team football available.

“At Milan we didn't play the football that I was used to,” Gourcuff said in an interview with France Football.

“The play was more fluid, a little slower and more reflective. Everyone occupied a specific area on the pitch and the technical quality was a lot higher than that seen in the French League.”

Gourcuff, who has become the focal point of the France national team, then admitted that Milan and Andrea Pirlo schooled him well.

“Pirlo is fantastic, I learned a lot from him, as I did from Clarence Seedorf and Ricky Kaka,” he enthused.

Bordeaux have a right to buy Gourcuff for £12m written into the loan deal they settled with Milan last summer.

The French outfit are struggling to raise the capital to buy Gourcuff outright, though, and he may well end up back at Milanello.

His feud with Ancelotti may prompt Milan to put him on the market again, however, as he is now believed to be worth at least £25m.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are reportedly interested in his signature and Milan, who are in need of capital themselves, could well cash in.

Defense Revolution in The Next Season

Milan are planning to overhaul their defence once the transfer window opens again in the summer, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Rossoneri backline has often been criticised this season for being old and is in need of rejuvenation, especially in the light of Paolo Maldini's retirement.

Another defensive talisman, Alessandro Nesta, has a chronic back problem and could well be forced to retire sooner than expected.

Kakha Kaladze is out until the middle of August and Milan do not plan to exercise their right to buy Philippe Senderos once his loan from Arsenal ends in the summer.

Milan, who have already brought in Thiago Silva and Felipe Mattioni to bolster their backline, have drawn up a shortlist of five names.

The Rossoneri are interested in Arsenal full-back Gael Clichy, Liverpool centre-back Daniel Agger, Sao Paulo's Joao Miranda, Palermo's versatile Simon Kjaer and Porto's Bruno Alves.

Agger is the most likely to end up in Rossonero next season, as his contract expires in 2010 and he could be available at a cut price.

Any deal for the Denmark international would therefore fit nicely with Milan Vice-President Adriano Galliani's budget cuts.

Transfers for the other four could be a lot trickier, though, as they each cost in excess of £12m and are highly prized by their clubs.

AC Milan consider Kanouté

Milan are considering a summer swoop for Sevilla hitman Frédéric Kanouté, according to the Spanish Press.

The Rossoneri are expected to make some significant signings at the end of the season after failing to reach their objectives.

Despite Vice-President Adriano Galliani's warning that the economic crisis will slow the market, there have been multiple transfer rumours.

Kanouté was a target for the Diavolo after the sale of Alberto Gilardino, but they opted for Alexandre Pato instead.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Kanouté remains an objective and could be a summer reinforcement.

However, Sevilla are believed to be keen to keep hold of Kanouté and are lining up a new contract.

Kanouté is tied to Sevilla until 2010, but at the age of 31 he could be traded in if a bid is significant enough.

It is possible that Milan may choose a younger model though and they have been linked with PSG starlet Guillaume Hoarau.

Napoli 0:0 AC Milan - match report

An entertaining and ill-tempered game ended 0-0, but Milan were fortunate to see Marek Hamsik's goal incorrectly disallowed.

Roberto Donadoni made his San Paolo debut against his past, having spent 13 years with Milan and former teammate Carlo Ancelotti. There was no time for sentiment, as Napoli hadn't won in 10, while the Rossoneri had to consolidate third place after their 5-1 triumph in Siena.

Clarence Seedorf, Kaka and Ronaldinho returned, albeit not 100 per cent fit, but Christian Abbiati, Daniele Bonera, Gennaro Gattuso, Marco Borriello, Kakha Kaladze, Emerson, Alessandro Nesta and the suspended Massimo Ambrosini were out. The home side missed Luigi Vitale, Walter Gargano, Christian Maggio, Leandro Rinaudo, Gennaro Iezzo and banned Salvatore Aronica. Daniele Mannini returned for the first time since his one-year doping ban was frozen pending further investigation on Friday.

Milan's last win here was January 1998 and their 3-1 loss cost them the Champions League qualification last season. After three minutes Matteo Contini cleared an Alexandre Pato chipped pass off Pippo Inzaghi's foot at the back post. Fabiano Santacroce intercepted a pass for Inzaghi with his arm, but it appeared to be involuntary, as it glanced off his head.

Nelson Dida smothered a Daniele Mannini snapshot, but a double defensive error almost let Pato through, as the Napoli centre-backs collided. Mannini dispossessed Gianluca Zambrotta and surged forward to drill wide.

Clarence Seedorf's shot was charged down and the ball ping-ponged around the box, but Inzaghi couldn't get the final touch, as Navarro flew to palm David Beckham's cross away. On the counter of the same move Marcelo Zalayeta's strike was deflected wide.

Navarro tipped a Seedorf screamer out from under the bar, but Marek Hamsik and Ezequiel Lavezzi combined beautifully for the Argentine's shot with the outside of his foot that forced Dida into a tough save. Napoli hit the back of the net from the corner, but it was incorrectly disallowed. Hamsik was not offside when he flicked on Zalayeta's towering header from five yards, as Andrea Pirlo was keeping him in play.

While bickering with Manuele Blasi, Beckham proved he has at least learned Italian swearwords. Paolo Cannavaro tracked back to nod Pirlo's chipped pass off Inzaghi's head. Mannini's diving header turned Lavezzi's cross over.

Kaka made his comeback for Seedorf, still struggling from a bruised right foot, and Ronaldinho followed for Inzaghi in an all-Brazilian trident. Paolo Maldini blocked Zalayeta's sliding finish for a corner and Fabiano Santacroce intercepted a Pato slalom.

Napoli should have scored on 64 minutes when Lavezzi floated the ball to the back post for Zalayeta, who miscalculated and volleyed wide with only Dida to beat!

Lavezzi also made a huge mistake, as Mannini had shrugged off Maldini and Mathieu Flamini on the counter from a Milan corner only for Pocho to send a cross-shot out of play.

Dida fumbled a Zalayeta angled drive from point-blank range, but did well to parry the follow-up too. There was almost a disaster in the Napoli box moments later, as confusion saw a back-pass leave Navarro stranded until Santacroce got back to clear off the line!

Lavezzi surged past four defenders in the box only to narrow the angle too much and hit the side-netting, as Napoli were pouring forward in waves. Carlo Ancelotti was tense and kicked the ball away when a handling offence from Mannini was not penalised and a scuffle broke out between Beckham and Blasi, who had been at each other all night.

A well-timed sliding tackle from Maldini cut short Lavezzi's counter, but some fabulous footwork left Pirlo for dead and Mannini was offside as he got on the end of the cross.

Navarro just about got Beckham's stoppage-time free kick under control at the near post, as it squirmed out of his grasp.
Napoli: Navarro; Santacroce, Cannavaro, Contini; Grava, Pazienza, Blasi, Hamsik, Mannini; Lavezzi, Zalayeta (Bogliacino 91)

Milan: Dida; Zambrotta, Maldini, Favalli (Senderos 71), Jankulovski; Beckham, Pirlo, Flamini; Seedorf (Kaka 57), Inzaghi (Ronaldinho 63), Pato

Kaka, The Magical Player

Kaká was born to Simone Cristina dos Santos Leite and Bosco Izecson Pereira Leite. His younger brother, Rodrigo (known as Digão), is also a professional footballer. When he was seven, his family moved to São Paulo. His school had arranged him in a local youth club called "Alphaville," who qualified to the final in a local tournament. There he was discovered by Brazilian giants São Paulo, who offered an assignment.

At the age of fifteen, Kaká suffered a career-threatening and possibly paralysis-inducing spinal fracture as a result of a swimming pool accident, but remarkably made a full recovery. He attributes his recovery to God and has since tithed his income to his church.

Kaká began his club career with São Paulo at the age of eight. He signed a contract at fifteen and led the São Paulo youth squad to Copa de Juvenil glory. Kaká made his senior side debut in January 2001 and scored twelve goals in 27 appearances, in addition to leading São Paulo to its first and only Torneio Rio-São Paulo championship. He scored ten in 22 matches the following season, and by this time his performance was soon attracting attention from European clubs. Kaká made a total of 58 appearances for São Paulo, scoring 23 times.

The steady European interest in Kaka culminated in his signing with Italian club A.C. Milan in 2003 for a fee of 8.5 million dollars, described in retrospect as "peanuts" by club owner Silvio Berlusconi. Within a month, he cracked the starting lineup, and his Serie A debut was in a 2–0 win over Ancona. He scored ten goals in thirty appearances that season, as Milan won the Scudetto and the European Super Cup.

Kaká was a part of the five-man midfield in the 2004–05 season, usually playing in a withdrawn role behind striker Andriy Shevchenko. He scored seven goals in 36 domestic appearances as Milan finished runner-up in the Scudetto race. Despite Milan losing the 2004–05 Champions League final to Liverpool on penalties, he was nonetheless voted the best midfielder of the tournament.

2005–06 saw Kaká score his first hat-tricks in domestic and European competition. On April 9, 2006, he scored his first Rossoneri hat-trick against Chievo; all three goals were scored in the second half. Seven months later, he scored his first Champions League hat-trick in a 4–1 group stage win over the Belgian side Anderlecht. The football world was beginning to take notice of a superstar in the making.

Shevchenko's departure to Chelsea for the 2006–07 season allowed Kaká to become the focal point of Milan's offense as he alternated between the midfield and striker positions. He finished as the top scorer in the 2006–07 Champions League campaign with ten goals. One of them helped the Rossoneri eliminate Celtic in the quarterfinals on a 1–0 aggregate, and three others proved fatal for Manchester United in the semifinals despite Milan losing the first leg. Following the convincing 3–0 second-leg defeat at the San Siro on May 2 that knocked out the English champions, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson declared that Kaká was one of the two best players in the world, alongside his charge Cristiano Ronaldo.

Kaká added the Champions League title to his trophy case for the first time when Milan defeated Liverpool on May 23, 2007. Though he went scoreless, he won a free kick that led to the first of Filippo Inzaghi's two goals, and provided the assist for the second. For his stellar play throughout the competition, he was voted the Vodafone Fans' Player of the Season in a poll of over 100,000 UEFA.com visitors. On August 30, Kaká was named by UEFA as both the top forward of the 2006–07 CL season and Club Footballer of the Year.

He played his 200th career match with Milan in a 1–1 home draw with Catania on September 30, and on October 5, he was named the 2006–07 FIFPro World Player of the Year. On 2 December 2007, Kaká became the eighth Milan player to win the Ballon d'Or, as he finished with a decisive 444 votes, long ahead of runner-up Cristiano Ronaldo. He signed a contract extension through 2013 with Milan on February 29, 2008.

Due to his contributions on and off the pitch, Time magazine named Kaká in the Time 100, a list of the world's 100 most influential people, on May 2. On October 14, he cast his footprints into the Estádio do Maracanã's sidewalk of fame, in a section dedicated to the memory of the country's top players.

On 13 January 2009, it was reported by the BBC that Manchester City made a bid for Kaká for over £100 million. Milan director Umberto Gandini replied in an emailed comment, "The only thing I can say is that the offer is huge and the club is pondering it carefully," and added that Milan would only discuss the matter if Kaká and Manchester City agreed to personal terms. Kaká initially responded by telling reporters he wanted to "grow old" at Milan and dreamed of captaining the club one day, but later said, “If Milan want to sell me, I’ll sit down and talk. I can say that as long as the club don’t want to sell me, I’ll definitely stay.” On January 19, Berlusconi announced that Manchester City had officially ended their bid after a discussion between the clubs, and that Kaká would remain with Milan. Milan supporters had protested outside the club headquarters earlier that evening, and later chanted outside Kaká's home, where he saluted them by flashing his jersey outside a window. Recently the English national team and Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard told the British press that the only footballer he would pay to watch was Kaká. Considering Lampard's status as a fellow professionel footballer the statement was truly a high recognition.

Beckham: AC Milan are truly special

David Beckham dreams of scoring the winner against Manchester United, as Milan are “a special club with unique dedication to football.”

The England star fought tooth and nail to extend his loan spell past March 9 and will return to LA Galaxy only in a time-share system from July to November.

“Milan are special for everyone who loves football,” he told the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“You hear their history, but don’t realise what it really means until you are involved. I’m not just talking about the players.

“Everything here is special, from the infrastructure to the people who work here, from the chef to the cleaners. It is a unique place, I’ve never seen such dedication to football.”

The Rossoneri are out of the UEFA Cup and Adriano Galliani has warned there may not be too many signings in the summer. Is Beckham worried?

“If I were the President, I’d be happy with what I have. When these players are fit and healthy, Milan are fantastic.

“I dream of playing the Champions League with Milan next season. I miss it very much and would love to score the winning goal in the Final.

“If it were against Manchester United? Well, that would be a problem, but if that happened next season I’d still want to win it, even if I support United.

“For this season I would like to see Manchester United-Barcelona. My former teammates would win, because at this moment United are too strong for anyone, even if when Steven Gerrard plays then Liverpool are remarkable.”

The three Serie A sides were squeezed out of the Champions League by Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, so does this make the Premier League better than Italian?

“I don’t think there’s a big difference, to be honest,” assured Beckham.

One of the reasons behind his demands to stay in Serie A is targeting a spot in the 2010 World Cup.

“I can bring my experience, because this is a young England squad,” he concluded. “I’m just happy to be useful to the side and work with Fabio Capello again, as he changed our mentality and we really needed that.”

Gattuso: We'd have beaten United

Milan midfielder Gennaro Gatttuso has claimed that the Rossoneri would have beaten Manchester United in the Champions League.

The Diavolo had to settle for UEFA Cup involvement this term after finishing fifth last season.

City rivals Inter were beaten by Manchester United in the last 16 of the Champions League.

“If we had faced United we would have won,” Gattuso told the Corriere dello Sport.

“The Champions League is always unpredictable and it is crucial that we regain our place in the competition. One year in the UEFA Cup is enough for us.

“If we can beat Napoli then we should finish third.

"However, we will need to galvanise the squad in the summer because if Paolo Maldini retires and we don't keep Giuseppe Favalli then we need another defender to help Thiago Silva out.”

Pippo wants to beat Baggio

Milan goal machine Pippo Inzaghi has set his next target after his 300th professional strike against Siena.

Inzaghi netted a brace in Milan's 5-1 demolition job against Siena and at the age of 35 he remains lethal in front of goal.

Now the Piacenza native has turned his attentions to another prestigious milestone.

“The first objective is to get into the Champions League,” Inzaghi told journalists.

“After that has been achieved, I am targeting Roberto Baggio's total of 318 goals - I just need 19 to beat him!

“I just have to keep grounded and calm and ensure that I keep doing my job correctly.

“Which was my best goal? I think the Champions League Final goal in Athens. The ball from Kaka was beautiful and my job wasn't very difficult but I managed an angled drive.

“I didn't sleep for 10 nights after that game - it was the most incredible of emotions.

“I love it when I hear that I am an example for kids growing up and I have heard that David Beckham compares me to Gary Lineker.

“I liked him a lot when I was a child and I wore his No 10 when I was growing up.”

Alexandre Pato, The Rising Star

Alexandre Rodrigues da Silva (born 2 September 1989, in Pato Branco, Paraná), better known as Alexandre Pato, is a Brazilian striker currently playing for Italian Serie A club Milan. The nickname 'Pato' is in honour of his place of birth but has led to commentators calling him 'The Duck' following the English translation. David Beckham has stated in an interview after joining Milan recently that Pato will definitely be one of the best players in years to come.

Incumbent European champions Milan officially confirmed the signing of Pato on 2 August 2007. The transfer fee paid amounts to the minimum fee clause in Pato's contract with Internacional for €22 million.

Due to Italian football regulations regarding non-EU minors, Pato was unable to play official matches for Milan until 3 January 2008, when the Italian transfer window and registration reopened. However, Milan was allowed to include the player in friendlies and training beginning 3 September 2007, one day after his 18th birthday. Pato made his non-competitive debut in a 2–2 draw against Dynamo Kiev on 7 September 2007 and scored a header. On 4 January 2008, Pato's transfer to Milan became official.

Pato scored his first Milan goal on his Serie A debut against Napoli in a 5–2 home victory on 13 January 2008. He scored his first brace for Milan, in a 2–0 victory over Genoa at the San Siro on 27 January 2008. Pato scored two goals in Milan's 5-1 defeat of Udinese just before the Christmas break, and managed to shine again with a brace against Roma the following matchday at the Stadio Olimpico on 11 January 2009, proving that he is a vital part of Milan's offense. His second goal really announced his arrival in Serie A, receiving the ball near the half way line from Ronaldinho, leaving Philippe Mexès for dead with a devastating turn of pace and delicately chipping Roma keeper Doni from a tight angle. He continued his impressive form for Milan, hitting 6 goals in 4 games including a well placed, game winning strike into the bottom right-hand corner against Fiorentina on 18 January. On 15 February, he scored his 11th goal of the season in a 2-1 defeat against home rivals Internazionale. On 26 February, Pato scored his 12th goal of the season against Werder Bremen in the UEFA Cup, a game Milan drew 2-2, but with this were knocked out the competition on the away goals rule. Pato continued his wonderful form in the domestic season with a stunning strike from outside the box against Siena on March 15. He doubled his tally in the match by scoring a placed finish after rounding goalkeeper Gianluca Curci.

After gaining prominence at club level, Pato was called up for the youth teams of Brazil. He helped Brazil win the 2007 South American Youth Championship, which qualified the country for the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, and has been selected by Dunga for the 2008 Summer Olympics. He scored his first goal for the senior team on his debut against Sweden at the Emirates Stadium in England on 26 March 2008. Pato beat Pelé's record of scoring a goal within seconds of his debut.

Siena 1:5 AC Milan - match report

Scorers: Pirlo pen 7 (M), Inzaghi 45, 71 (M), Pato 55, 77 (M), Maccarone 62 (S)

Milan demolished Siena 5-1 with Pippo Inzaghi celebrating his 300th professional goal, but there's bad injury news for Christian Abbiati and Kaka.

The Rossoneri got back on track with last week's 3-0 victory over Atalanta, but were still under pressure for third place. The injury crisis was starting to calm, as Kaka and Ronaldinho were back on the bench, but Clarence Seedorf, Daniele Bonera, Gennaro Gattuso, Kakha Kaladze, Marco Borriello and Alessandro Nesta were out. David Beckham therefore started in a trequartista role for the second game running.

Last weekend Siena also ended a six-match winless streak by conquering Catania, but had only ever beaten Milan once here in 2005 and lost three. Robur missed the suspended Daniele Galloppa.

After six minutes the referee ointed to the spot as Houssine Kharja clumsily clattered into Mathieu Flamini for a penalty. Andrea Pirlo converted coolly right into the corner despite Gianluca Curci guessing the right angle.

Moments later Milan were forced into a substitution, as Giuseppe Favalli accidentally clashed with Christian Abbiati and the goalkeeper came out with the worst of it with a suspected fracture. Nelson Dida came off the bench for his Serie A debut this season.

Favalli charged down Kharja's header and Flamini nodded a Beckham free kick off target. Dida captured Maccarone's effort and Simone Vergassola volleyed over from six yards.

In stoppages Vergassola wanted a penalty for a Marek Jankulovski handling offence, but the defender's arm was across his chest and so it could not have been a penalty.

Milan went into the break 2-0 up, as a Beckham corner found Pippo Inzaghi's left-foot volley from five yards. The Siena defence left him too much space and that was his 299th goal as a professional.

Kaka replaced Massimo Ambrosini for the second half in his first appearance since February 7, moving Beckham back to his usual position. Emanuele Calaio' put the ball in the back of the net, but was flagged offside.

Pato put a third cherry on the Milan cake with a fantastic strike. The youngster gathered from almost 30 metres and unleashed an unstoppable rocket into the top corner. It was similar to a goal the teenager scored in the UEFA Cup earlier this season.

Kaka should've had a fourth, but ballooned over from close range! He was totally unmarked from seven yards in front of an open goal and fired over.

Siena pulled one back with former Milan youth product Maccarone, whose angled drive from the edge of the box flashed across Dida towards the far bottom corner.

Inzaghi hit his third century, his 300th goal as a professional football player, and celebrated with a specially-prepared shirt. He ran on to Pirlo's through ball and did not hesitate to slot it past Curci at the near post.

There was bad news too, as Kaka got a knock to the ankle and limped off just 25 minutes into his comeback, making way for Ronaldinho.

Pato scored Milan's fifth in curious circumstances, as the goalkeeper came rushing out and was caught out by the young Brazilian, who went round him to slot into an empty net.

Inzaghi wet close to a hat-trick, but Siena really should've scored when Kharja's cross flashed across the face of goal with both Maccarone and Amoruso unable to get the final touch. Paul Codrea thumped the crossbar from outside the box, as Siena refused to give in.

Beckham almost got on the scoresheet with the final kick of the game, but drilled inches over from Pato's assist.
Siena: Curci; Zuniga, Portanova, Brandao (Ficagna 48), Del Grosso; Vergassola, Codrea, Barusso, Kharja; Maccarone, Calaiò (Amoruso 70)

Milan: Abbiati (Dida 12); Zambrotta, Maldini, Favalli, Jankulovski; Flamini, Pirlo, Ambrosini (Kaka 46) (Ronaldinho 72); Beckham; Inzaghi, Pato

Milan's History

The club was founded as a cricket club in 1899 by British expatriates Alfred Edwards and Herbert Kilpin, who came from the British city of Nottingham. In honor of its origins, the club has retained the English spelling of its city's name, instead of changing it to the Italian Milano (though it was forced to do it during the fascist regime, like Genoa and Internazionale); it should be noted that the Italian pronunciation is actually MEE-lan, coming from the local dialect. Milan won their first Italian championship title in 1901, and then again in 1906 and 1907.

In 1908 the club experienced a split caused by internal disagreements over the signing of foreign players, which led to the forming of another Milan-based team, Internazionale. Following these events, Milan did not manage to win a single domestic title until 1950-51. In 1963 they ensured their first continental title, winning European Cup beating Benfica in the final. This success was repeated in 1969, and followed by an Intercontinental Cup title the same year. Following retirement of Gianni Rivera, Milan started a declining period, during which they were involved in the 1980 Totonero scandal and were relegated to Serie B as punishment, for the first time in their history. The scandal was centred on a betting syndicate paying players and officials to fix the outcome of matches. Milan quickly returned back to Serie A, but returned to Serie B only one year later as they ended in the relegation zone their 1981-82 Serie A campaign.

In 1986, entrepreneur Silvio Berlusconi acquired the club, and immediately invested a lot of money in the team, appointing rising coach Arrigo Sacchi at the helm of the rossoneri and signing a Dutch trio of Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard. This was the beginning of the most successful time in the club's history, as AC Milan won seven domestic titles, five UEFA Champions League trophies, and three Intercontinental Cups.

More recently, Milan were involved in the 2006 Serie A scandal where five teams were accused of fixing matches by selecting favourable referees. Milan were initially punished with a 15 point deduction and consequently did not qualify for the UEFA Champions League. An appeal saw their penalty reduced to 8 points and allowed to retain their 2006-07 Champions League participation, where they won the competition.
